Abu al-Hawra' said: I said to Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both): What were you like in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? And what did you understand and retain from him? He said: I retained from him that I heard him say: "Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt, for evil is doubt and good is tranquillity." And I retained from him the five prayers, and a few words which I say at their conclusion. He said: "Say: O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being, take me as Your friend among those You have taken as friends, bless me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed; for indeed You decree and none can decree against You. The one whom You befriend is never humiliated. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted." Burayd bin Abi Maryam said: Then I went to Muhammad bin Ali (al-Baqir) in the valley and narrated this hadith to him from Abu al-Hawra', from Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "He spoke the truth; these are the very words we were taught to say in the qunut."
