حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ الْقَطَوَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ التَّمَّارُ الْمَدَنِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي مُسْلِمُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، عَنِ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، فَجَاءَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ الْقَوْمُ وَمَضَى وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ لَا يَعْلَمُ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ هَذَا حَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ يُسَلِّمُ، فَلَحِقَهُ فَقَالَ: وَعَلَيْكَ يَا سَيِّدِي. فَقِيلَ لَهُ: تَقُولُ يَا سَيِّدِي؟ فَقَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «إِنَّهُ سَيِّدٌ»
Sa'id al-Maqburi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: We were with Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) came and greeted him with salam. The people returned his greeting and he went on, while Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not realise it. He was told: This is Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) greeting you. So he went after him and said: Wa 'alaykum al-salam, O my master! He was asked: Do you say to him "O my master"? He said: I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is a leader (sayyid)."
