Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), she said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I not offer the aqiqah for my son? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, but shave his head, and give the equivalent of the weight of his hair in silver (wariq) - or he said: silver (fiddah) - in charity to the poor." Then when she gave birth to Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), she did the same for him. Musa bin Dawud said in his narration: "To the awfad and the poor."
Imam Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Awfad means the needy, and awqas is the (amount) that lies between two thresholds of zakah."
