Hafs bin Khalid said: An elderly man who had come to us from Mosul told me; he said: I accompanied al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) on one of his journeys, and in a desolate land he needed to perform the ritual bath (ghusl). He said: Screen me. So I screened him. Then my glance happened to fall on him, and I saw that his body was cut and gashed by swords. I said: By Allah! I have seen marks on you such as I have never seen on anyone else. He said: Did you see that? I said: Yes. He said: "Indeed, by Allah, there is not a single wound among them except that it was received with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and in the path of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
