Ubadah bin al-Walid bin Ubadah bin al-Samit said: I visited Sayyidah Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh bin Afra' (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her about her case, and she said: I was married to a cousin of mine, but I disliked him, so I obtained a khul' (divorce at the wife's request) from him. Then I came to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: There is no waiting period ('iddah) upon you from him, except that if his relations with you were recent, then you should ascertain that you are not pregnant by one menstrual cycle. Rubayyi' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) took that ruling from the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Maryam al-Maghaliyyah, the wife of Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him), who had obtained a khul' from him.
