Sayyidah Layla (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Umar bin al-Khattab was among the harshest of people towards us because of our Islam. When we were preparing to set out for the land of Abyssinia, Umar bin al-Khattab came to me while I was on my camel about to depart. He asked: "Where are you going, O Umm Abdullah?" I said: "You have harmed us in our religion, so we are going somewhere in Allah's land where we will not be harmed in the worship of Allah." He said: "May Allah be with you," and then he left. My husband Amir bin Rabi'ah came, and I told him about the softness I had seen in Umar. He said: "Do you hope that he will become Muslim?" I said: "Yes." He said: "By Allah, he will not become Muslim until al-Khattab's donkey becomes Muslim."
