It is narrated from Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Uhud, he placed his women in a fortress called Fari', and placed Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) with them as well. Hassan would look out from time to time toward the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): when he (peace and blessings be upon him) charged at the polytheists, he too would grow excited and fierce within the fortress, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell back, he too would draw back. Then some Jews came, and one of them climbed up the fortress until he was looking down upon us from above. I said to Hassan: "Get up, go to him and kill him." He said: "I do not have the courage for this; had I had it, I would have been with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So Safiyyah herself struck at his head until she cut it off. When she had cut it off, she said: "O Hassan! Go to his head and throw it to them," and they were at the foot of the fortress. He said: "By Allah, I do not have that in me either." So I took hold of his head myself and threw it at them. They said: "By Allah, now we know that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has not left his family unprotected." So they scattered and went away. And before that Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, with traces of yellow (perfume) on him as if he had just been a bridegroom, and he was saying:
"Wait a little, Jamal will reach the battle too; there is no fear of death when the appointed time arrives."
