حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ، حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَطَاءٍ، أَنَّ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، سَأَلَتْهُ مَا سَمَّيْتَ ابْنَتَكَ؟ قَالَ: سَمَّيْتُهَا بَرَّةَ، فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: نَهَى عَنْ هَذَا الِاسْمِ، سَمَّيْتَ بَرَّةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَا تُزَكُّوا أَنْفُسَكُمُ اللهُ أَعْلَمُ بِأَهْلِ الْبِرِّ مِنْكُمْ» قَالُوا: وَمَا نُسَمِّيهَا؟ قَالَ: «سَمُّوهَا زَيْنَبَ» ،
It is narrated from Muhammad bin Amr bin Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyidah Zaynab bint Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked him: What have you named your daughter? He said: I have named her Barrah. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade this name; you named her Barrah! For the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not declare yourselves pure; Allah knows best who among you is righteous." They said: Then what should we name her? He said: "Name her Zaynab."
