Sayyidah Halimah bint Abi Dhu'ayb al-Sa'diyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the foster mother of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who nursed him (peace and blessings be upon him) and weaned him, narrated: A severe year of drought struck us and left us nothing, so we set out with some women of Banu Sa'd bin Bakr for Makkah to look for infants to nurse. When we reached Makkah, the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was offered to every one of the women among us, but she would refuse him and dislike (taking) him. The reason was that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had no father, and the wet-nurses hoped for good, that is, a reward, from the fathers. A woman would say: What will I do with this orphan child? What reward could his mother give me? So they disliked him. He was offered to me as well, and I too refused. Then there remained no woman of my people who had not found an infant to nurse, and the time came for them to return to their lands. I feared that I would return without an infant, so I said to my husband: If I take that orphan boy, it would be better than returning without an infant. So I came to his mother, took him, and brought him to my home. I had a son whom I was nursing, and he used to stay awake much of the night from hunger and would not sleep. Then when I placed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at my breasts, they came to him with as much milk as he wished, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) was satisfied, and his brother too was satisfied and slept. During the night my husband went to our she-camel which, by Allah, would not give us even a single drop of milk, and his hand fell upon her udder, and it was full of milk. So he came to me and said: O daughter of Wahb, by Allah, I think this being is blessed. Then he told me the news of the she-camel, and I told him what I had seen in my breasts that night. Then we set out riding our donkey, which before that used to lag behind the other donkeys out of weakness. But when we rode on it heading towards our land, it would go ahead of the people, until they would cry out to me: Woe to you, O daughter of Abu Dhu'ayb, you have outstripped us! Surely this donkey of yours has some special matter. Then we brought him to the land of Banu Sa'd bin Bakr, and we experienced nothing but blessing. Our shepherd would take our goats out to graze, and our people would also send out their goats, and when evening came and they all returned, our goats would come back full of milk while not one of their goats would give a single drop of milk. So they would say to their shepherds: Woe to you! Graze where the shepherd of the daughter of Abu Dhu'ayb grazes. This state continued with us. Then one day he and his foster brother were playing among our goats behind our houses when his brother came running and said: That Qurayshi brother of mine, he has been killed! So his father and I ran towards him. He met us with his colour turned pale. Sometimes I would hold him to my chest and sometimes his father, and we would say to him: My son, what happened to you? He would say: I do not know; two men came to me, threw me down, split open my belly, and began stirring it. Then his father turned to me and said: I think something has befallen this boy; take him quickly to his family before the matter becomes serious with us. So I did not delay until I brought him to Makkah to his mother and said to her: O Zi'r (foster mother), I have weaned my son and he has come out of the danger of illness, so now keep him. She said: What is the matter with you that you show reluctance towards him? You used to ask me to leave him with you. It is as if you have come to fear Satan for him. Rather, let me tell you something about myself and him: When I gave birth to him, I saw that a light came out of me by which the palaces of Busra in the land of Syria were lit up.
