Ikrimah and Abu Yazid al-Madini (may Allah have mercy on them both) - or one of them; Abd al-Razzaq (may Allah have mercy on him) was unsure - narrated that Sayyidah Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was taken as a bride to Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), we found nothing in his house except sand spread out, a stuffed pillow, a jar and a jug. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to Ali: Do not do anything new - or he said: "Do not go near your wife until I come to you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "Is my brother here?" Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) - who was the mother of Usamah bin Zayd, was Abyssinian and was a righteous woman - said: O Messenger of Allah! This is your brother, and you have married your daughter to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had established brotherhood between his Companions, and had made Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) his own brother. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is how it is, O Umm Ayman." She said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a vessel containing water and said over it what Allah willed him to say, then wiped the chest and face of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with it. Then he called Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she rose and came towards him (peace and blessings be upon him), stumbling in her wrap out of shyness. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkled some of that water on her and said to her what Allah willed, then said to her: "I have spared no effort for you; I have married you to the most beloved person of my family to me." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a figure behind the curtain - or behind the door - and said: "Who is this?" She said: Asma'. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Asma' bint Umays?" She said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you come with the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to honour her?" She said: Yes. Indeed, on the night a girl is taken to her husband, she needs a woman to be near her, so that if some need arises for her, she can tell her. She said: So he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for me, and that is among the deeds I rely on most. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Here is your wife." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and turned away. She said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) kept supplicating for the two of them until he disappeared into his apartment.
