Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 20655 — The Prophet ﷺ used to come to us

Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to come to us in Makkah twice every day. One day, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us at midday, I said: O my father! This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for him! He has not come at this hour except for some important matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Do you know that Allah has given me permission to set out (for the emigration)?" Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (May I have) your companionship, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(You will have) companionship." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have two riding camels which I have been feeding since such-and-such a time in anticipation of this day; take one of them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For its price, O Abu Bakr." He said: For its price then, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, if you wish. Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: So we prepared provisions for them, then I cut my nitaq (waistband) and tied it with part of it. Then the two of them set out and stayed in the cave on Mount Thawr. When they reached it, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the cave before him (peace and blessings be upon him) and left no hole in it without putting his finger into it, for fear that there might be some harmful creature in it. When Quraysh found them missing, they went out in search of them and set a reward of one hundred she-camels for (capturing) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They went roaming about the mountains of Makkah until they reached the mountain in which the two of them were. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), seeing a man who appeared to be facing the cave, said: O Messenger of Allah! He can see us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not at all; angels are screening us with their wings." Then that man sat down and urinated facing the cave, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had he been seeing us, he would not have done this." The two of them stayed there for three nights. Amir bin Fuhayrah, the freed slave of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), would bring Abu Bakr's goats to them in the evening and leave them in the last part of the night; in the morning he would join the shepherds at the pasture and return with them in the evening, but he would walk slowly, stooping, until when it became dark he would turn with his goats towards the two of them, so the shepherds thought he had been with them. Abdullah bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) would stay in Makkah during the day gathering news, then come to the two of them when it became dark and inform them, then leave them in the last part of the night and be in Makkah in the morning as though he had spent the night there. Then the two of them came out of the cave and took the coastal route. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would walk in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he feared that someone might come from behind, he would walk behind him (peace and blessings be upon him); he kept doing so throughout the journey. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man well known among the people, so when someone met them and asked Abu Bakr: Who is this with you? he would say: This is a guide who shows me the way, meaning guidance in religion, while the other person thought he was a guide for the road. Then, when the two of them reached the settlements of Qudayd, which lay on their route along the coast, a man came to the gathering of Banu Mudlij and said: I have seen two riders towards the coast, and I think one of them is that man of Quraysh whom they are seeking. Suraqah bin Malik said: Those are two riders whom we sent in search of him, so as to join the people. Then he called his slave-girl, spoke to her secretly, and ordered her to take his horse out and to lower his spear and not raise it up, until he (Suraqah) came to her at her place at such-and-such a spot. Then he came to her, mounted his horse and set out on their trail. Suraqah said: I drew so near to them that I could hear the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I spurred the horse on, and it fell on its nostrils. So I took out the arrows from my quiver and cast lots with them as to whether I would harm him or not, and what came out was: you will not harm him. But my heart would not accept it, so I followed him and caught up with him at a similar spot, and the horse fell again. I pulled its leg out (of the ground) once more and cast lots with the arrows as to whether I would harm him or not, and again it came out: you will not harm him. My heart still would not accept it, until when I was at a similar spot, I feared that what had befallen me before would befall me again, so I called out to them and said: I see that you will have a great standing, so stop, I wish to speak with you. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped, and he asked him to write a guarantee of safety for him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that it be written for him, and so it was written for him. Suraqah said: When the day of Hunayn came, I brought the document, took it out and called out: I am Suraqah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Today is a day of keeping faith." Suraqah said: I could liken the whiteness and gleam of his (peace and blessings be upon him) shin to nothing but the heart (pith) of a palm tree. Then I wanted to ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) something, so I said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a man who owns livestock, and the troughs are filled with water, and my animals drink, and water is left over in the troughs, and stray ownerless animals come and drink too. Is there any reward for me in that? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, there is reward in (giving water to) every creature with a thirsty (burning) liver."
