وَعَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ أَنَّهُ نَزَلَ فِي بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ فِي شَأْنِ مَا صَنَعَ بِهِمْ عَامِلُهُمُ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنْ جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَأٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا} [الحجرات: ٦] الْآيَةَ قَالَتْ: " وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَ إِلَيْهِمْ يَصْدُقُ أَمْوَالَهُمْ، فَلَمَّا سَمِعُوا بِهِ أَقْبَلَ رَكْبٌ مِنْهُمْ فَقَالُوا: نَسِيرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْمِلُهُ، فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ بِذَلِكَ ظَنَّ أَنَّهُمْ سَارُوا إِلَيْهِ لِيَقْتُلُوهُ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ مَنَعُوا صَدَقَاتَهُمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَأَقْبَلَ الْقَوْمُ حَتَّى قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ ثُمَّ صَفُّوا وَرَاءَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الصَّفِّ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلَاةَ انْصَرَفُوا، فَقَالُوا: إِنَّا نَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ غَضَبِ اللهِ وَغَضَبِ رَسُولِهِ، سَمِعْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِرَسُولِكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ يَصْدُقُ أَمْوَالَنَا فَسُرِرْنَا بِذَلِكَ وَقَرَّتْ بِهِ أَعْيُنُنَا، وَأَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَلْقَاهُ وَنَسِيرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَسَمِعْنَا أَنَّهُ رَجَعَ فَخَشِينَا أَنْ يَكُونَ رَدَّهُ غَضَبٌ مِنَ اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ "
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that concerning Banu al-Mustaliq, regarding the treatment their governor al-Walid bin Uqbah had given them, this verse was revealed: "O you who believe! If a sinful person comes to you with news, then verify it carefully." [Surah al-Hujurat: 6] She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent someone to them to collect the zakah on their wealth. When they heard of it, a group of riders from among them came forward and said: We will travel with the envoy of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and give him a mount. When he (al-Walid) heard this, he thought they were coming to kill him, so he turned back and said: O Messenger of Allah! Banu al-Mustaliq have refused to pay their zakah. The people came on until they reached Madinah, then they stood in the row behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, they turned and said: We seek refuge with Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger. O Messenger of Allah! We heard about your envoy whom you sent to collect the zakah on our wealth, and we were pleased by it and our eyes were cooled, and we wanted to meet him and travel with the envoy of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then we heard that he had turned back, and we feared that his turning back was due to the anger of Allah and His Messenger. So they kept making excuses to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until this verse was revealed.
