حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ، ثنا أَبِي، ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَتْ: كَانَ بِحُجْرَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صِيَاحٌ فَخَرَجَ فِي رِدَاءٍ مُتَوَشِّحًا، فَقَالَ: «مَا هَؤُلَاءِ؟» ، قَالُوا: يَخْتَصِمُونَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَقَضَى بَيْنَهُمْ نَبِيُّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِنِّي لِأَقْضِي بَيْنَكُمْ، وَلَعَلَّ أَحَدَكُمْ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَبْلَغَ مِنْ أَخِيهِ فِي الْكَلَامِ، فَاقْضِي لَهُ بِمَا أَسْتَبِينُ فَمَنْ قَضَيْتُ لَهُ شَيْئًا لَيْسَ لَهُ فَإِنَّمَا أُعْطِيهِ حَدَّهُ مِنَ النَّارِ»
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); she said: There was shouting near the chamber of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out wrapped in a cloak and said: "Who are these people?" It was said: O Messenger of Allah, they are disputing with one another. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) judged between them, then said: "I judge between you, and perhaps one of you is more eloquent in speech than his brother, so I judge according to what becomes clear to me. If I award someone something that is not his right, then I am in fact only giving him his portion of the Fire."
