Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All the speech of the son of Adam counts against him, not for him, except enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, or the remembrance of Allah." At this, a man among the people said: How severe this hadith is!
Sufyan al-Thawri said: What is severe about it? Did your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not tell you from your Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, that Allah Almighty says: "On the Day when the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, none will speak except one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is right. That is the True Day." [Surah al-Naba': 39] And He said: "There is no good in much of their private conversation, except for one who enjoins charity, or what is right, or making peace between people", to the end of the verse. [Surah al-Nisa': 114]
