حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ النَّرْسِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ثنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، ثنا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَدَنِيُّ، حَدَّثَتْنِي حَفْصَةُ، قَالَتْ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاضِعًا ثَوْبَهُ بَيْنَ فَخِذَيْهِ، فَاسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ كَهَيْأَتِهِ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ كَهَيْأَتِهِ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلِيٌّ فِي أُنَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ كَهَيْأَتِهِ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ فَتَجَلَّلَ بِثَوْبِهِ ثُمَّ تَحَدَّثُوا ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَذِنْتُ لَهُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى هَيْأَتِكَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ فَأَذِنْتَ لَهُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى هَيْأَتِكَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلِيٌّ فِي أُنَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِكَ فَأَذِنْتُ لَهُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى هَيْأَتِكَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ فَتَجَلَّلْتَ بِثَوْبِكَ، فَقَالَ: «أَلَا أَسْتَحْيِي مِمَّا تَسْتَحْيِي مِنْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ؟» . قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ: وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي بِنَحْوِهِ
Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had placed his garment between his two thighs. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to enter, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission while he remained in the same state. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission, and he gave him permission while he remained in the same state. Then Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission along with some of his Companions, and he gave him permission too while he remained in the same state. Then Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission, and he covered himself with his garment. Then they talked for a while and then left. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr asked permission and I gave him permission while you were in the same state; then Umar asked permission and you gave him permission while you were in the same state; then Ali asked permission along with some of your Companions and I gave him permission while you were in the same state; then Uthman asked permission and you covered yourself with your garment. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Should I not feel shy before one before whom even the angels feel shy?" Ibn Jurayj said: My father also told me a similar report.
