باب قوله ولولا فضل الله عليكم ورحمته وأن الله رءوف رحيم
Chapter: His words: "Had it not been for the favour of Allah upon you and His mercy, and that Allah is Kind and Merciful"

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ الطَّاهِرِ بْنِ السَّرْحِ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ: {لَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ} [النور: ٢٠] يَعْنِي: «لَعَاقَبَكُمْ بِمَا قُلْتُمْ لِعَائِشَةَ» ، {وَأَنَّ اللهَ رَءُوفٌ} يَعْنِي: «رَؤُوفٌ بِكُمْ حِينَ عَفَا وَلَمْ يُعَاقِبْكُمْ فِيمَا قُلْتُمْ مِنَ الْقَذْفِ»
Sa'id bin Jubayr said: "Had it not been for the favour of Allah upon you and His mercy" [Surah al-Nur: 20]: that is, He would have punished you for what was said about Sayyidah Aishah. "And that Allah is Most Kind": that is, Most Kind to you, since He pardoned you and did not punish you for the words of slander.
