Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) emigrated, he left us and his daughters behind (in Makkah). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had settled in Madinah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him), and sent with him his freed slave Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), and gave the two of them two camels and five hundred dirhams which he (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken from Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), so that they could buy with them the mounts they needed. And Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Abdullah bin Urayqit al-Du'ali with the two of them with two or three camels, and wrote to (his son) Abdullah bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he should bring his family, namely Abu Bakr's mother, Umm Ruman, me, my brother, and Asma', the wife of al-Zubayr. So they set out together until they reached Qudayd, (where) Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) bought three camels with those five hundred dirhams. Then they all entered Makkah, and they met Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him), who intended to emigrate, so we all set out together. And Zayd and Abu Rafi' set out with Sayyidah Fatimah, Sayyidah Umm Kulthum and Sayyidah Sawdah bint Zam'ah (may Allah be pleased with them), and Zayd mounted Sayyidah Umm Ayman, her son Ayman, and Usamah (may Allah be pleased with them), and we travelled together, until, when we were at al-Bid of Namir, my camel bolted while I was in a mihaffah (litter), and my mother was with me in it. My mother began to say: O my daughter! O my bride! Until our camel was caught, after it had already descended from the mountain pass of Harsha, and Allah kept us safe. Then we arrived in Madinah, and I stayed with the family of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me. In those days the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was building the mosque and some rooms around the mosque, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) lodged his family in them. We stayed in them for several days, then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! What prevents you from consummating the marriage with your wife? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The mahr (dowry)." So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him (peace and blessings be upon him) twelve uqiyah and a nash (of silver), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent it to us, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) consummated the marriage with me in this very house of mine in which I now live, and it is the house in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) was buried. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also lodged Sayyidah Sawdah bint Zam'ah (may Allah be pleased with her) with him in one of those houses, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go to her as well. the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married me while I used to play with the other girls, and I was not even told that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had married me, until my mother took hold of me and kept me confined in the house; then it occurred to me that I had been married, and I did not ask her anything until she herself told me.
