حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي جَبِيرَةَ بْنِ الضَّحَّاكِ قَالَ: " كَانَ الْأَنْصَارُ يَتَصَدَّقُونَ وَيَعْطُونَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ فَأَصَابَتْهُمْ سَنَةٌ فَأَمْسَكُوا، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ} [البقرة: ١٩٥] "
Sayyiduna Abu Jabirah bin al-Dahhak (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Ansar used to give charity and give as much as Allah willed. Then a year of drought struck them, so they held back from giving charity. Then Allah revealed this verse: "And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction" [Surah al-Baqarah: 195].
