Sayyiduna Abu Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat and related that a man had died. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did any of you see him doing any good deed?" A man said: Yes, I stood guard with him for one night in the path of Allah. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions stood up, and when he was lowered into the grave, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) threw soil with his hand and then said: "Your companions think that you are among the people of Hell, while I bear witness that you are among the people of Paradise." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do not ask about people's deeds, but ask about the fitrah (natural disposition)."
