حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، ثنا أَبُو خَلْدَةَ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ سِيرِينَ قُلْتُ: أُصَلِّي وَمَا أَدْرِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ صَلَّيْتُ أَوْ أَرْبَعًا، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْعُرْيَانِ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى يَوْمًا وَدَخَلَ الْبَيْتَ، وَكَانَ فِي الْقَوْمِ رَجُلٌ طَوِيلُ الْيَدَيْنِ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُسَمِّيهِ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَصُرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ قَالَ: «لَمْ تَقْصُرْ وَلَمْ أَنَسَ» قَالَ: بَلْ نَسِيتَ الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ: «فَتَقَدَّمَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَسَجَدَ مِثْلَ سُجُودِهِ أَوْ أَطْوَلَ، ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ، وَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ وَسَجَدَ مِثْلَ سُجُودِهِ، أَوْ أَطْوَلَ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ وَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَلَمْ يَحْفَظْ مُحَمَّدٌ سَلَّمَ بَعْدُ أَمْ لَا»
Sayyiduna Abu al-Uryan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer one day and went into the house. Among the people was a man with long hands, whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to call Dhu al-Yadayn. Dhu al-Yadayn said: O Messenger of Allah! Has the prayer been shortened, or did you forget? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It was not shortened, nor did I forget." He said: Rather, you forgot in the prayer. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led them in two rak'ahs, then said the salam, then said the takbir and prostrated like his usual prostration or longer, then said the takbir and raised his head, then said the takbir and prostrated like his usual prostration or longer, then said the takbir and raised his head. (The narrator) Muhammad did not remember whether he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the salam again after that or not.
