Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 19028 — The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Mu'alla al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon and said: "A servant was given the choice by his Lord to live in this world as long as he wished and eat from it, or to meet his Lord, and he chose to meet his Lord." At this Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wept. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you not wonder at this old man? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a righteous servant whom his Lord gave the choice between this world and meeting Him, and he chose to meet his Lord; yet Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) understood best of them all what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! We would ransom you with our wealth and our children. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no one among the people who has done us greater favour through his companionship and his wealth than Ibn Abi Quhafah. If I were to take a khalil (intimate friend), I would take Ibn Abi Quhafah, but between us is love and the brotherhood of faith, and your companion is the khalil of Allah."
