حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَاشِدٍ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْمِصِّيصِيُّ، ثنا أَشْعَثُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ، عَنِ الْمِنْهَالِ بْنِ خَلِيفَةَ، عَنِ الْأَزْرَقِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، قَالَ: صَلَّى بِنَا إِمَامٌ لَنَا يُكَنَّى أَبَا رِمْثَةَ فِي مُصَلَّانَا الْعَصْرَ وَمَعَنَا رَجُلٌ قَدْ شَهِدَ التَّكْبِيرَةَ الْأُولَى مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ أَبُو رِمْثَةَ قَامَ الرَّجُلُ يَشْفَعُ فَنَظَرَ أَبُو رِمْثَةَ، فَقَالَ: صَلَّيْتُ هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ يَقُومَانِ فِي الصَّفِّ الْمُقَدَّمِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ، وَكَانَ رَجُلٌ قَدْ شَهِدَ التَّكْبِيرَةَ الْأُولَى مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ وَصَلَّى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ عَنْ يَمِينٍ وَيَسَارٍ حَتَّى رَأَيْنَا وَضَحَ خَدَّيْهِ، ثُمَّ انْفَتَلَ فَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقَوْمَ، فَقَامَ الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي أَدْرَكَ مَعَهُ التَّكْبِيرَةَ الْأُولَى مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ لَيَشْفَعَ فَوَثَبَ إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ فَأَخَذَ بِمَنْكِبَيْهِ فَهَزَّهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: اجْلِسْ، فَإِنَّهُ لَنْ يُهْلِكَ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِصَلَاتِهِمْ فَصْلٌ فَرَفَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَصَرَهُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: «أَصَابَ اللهُ بِكَ يَا ابْنَ الْخَطَّابِ»
Azraq bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) said: An imam of ours, who was called by the kunyah Abu Rimthah, was leading us in the Asr prayer in our place of prayer, and with us was a man who had caught the first takbir of the prayer. When Abu Rimthah finished the prayer, that man (immediately) stood up to pray more. Abu Rimthah looked at him and said: I prayed this prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). At that time Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) were standing in the front row on his (peace and blessings be upon him) right side, and a man who had caught the first takbir of the prayer prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam to the right and the left, until we saw the whiteness of both his (peace and blessings be upon him) cheeks. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned round and sat facing the people. The man who had caught the first takbir with him (peace and blessings be upon him) (immediately) stood up to pray more, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) suddenly leapt towards him, took hold of both his shoulders and shook him, then said: Sit down, for the People of the Book were brought to ruin only because there was no separation between their prayers. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze towards the one who had said this and said: "O Ibn al-Khattab, Allah has made you speak what is right."
