Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Salman and Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with them both). One day Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) and saw Umm al-Darda' in a shabby, unkempt state. He asked: O Umm al-Darda', what is the matter with you? She said: Your brother Abu al-Darda' has no desire for anything of this world; he stands (in voluntary prayer) at night and fasts by day. Then Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) came; he welcomed Sayyiduna Salman and placed food before him. Sayyiduna Salman said to him: Eat. He said: I am fasting. Sayyiduna Salman said: I adjure you to break your fast. So Sayyiduna Salman refused to eat unless he (Abu al-Darda') ate with him, and so he ate with him. Then Sayyiduna Salman stayed with him for the night. When it was night, Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' wanted to get up for (voluntary) prayer, but Sayyiduna Salman stopped him, and then said: O Abu al-Darda', your body has a right over you, your Lord has a right over you, and your family has a right over you; give everyone who has a right his right. When dawn was approaching, he said: Now get up if you wish. So both of them got up and performed ablution, then they prayed, then they went out to the prayer. Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) came close to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to tell him about this, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your body has a right over you, just as Salman said."
