Gharif (may Allah have mercy on him), a man from the family of Ibn al-Daylami, said: We came to Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: "Narrate to us a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which there is neither addition nor omission." At this he became angry and said: "One of you recites the Qur'an while his mushaf is hanging in his house, and yet he adds and omits (while reciting)." We said: "We only wanted you to narrate to us directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with no one between you and him." He said: We came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning a companion of ours who had made (the Fire) obligatory upon himself (through some sin), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Free a slave on his behalf; Allah will free, for every limb of it, a limb of his from the Fire." Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibn Ayyub al-Allaf narrated this hadith to us in this way from Mahdi bin Ja'far, from Damrah, from al-Awza'i, from Ibrahim bin Abi Ablah, from his original book.
