Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abu al-Azhar and I went in to Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: O Abu al-Asqa', narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in which there is no error, no addition or omission, and no forgetfulness. He said: Has any of you recited anything of the Qur'an tonight? We said: Yes, but we do not retain it perfectly; sometimes we add a waw or an alif and sometimes we leave it out. He said: This is the Qur'an, written down among you, and you spare no effort in preserving it, yet you claim that you add and omit. Then what of hadiths that we heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), perhaps hearing them from him only once? It is enough for you that we narrate the hadith to you according to its meaning.
