Abu Mus'ab al-Makki (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I met Anas bin Malik, Zayd bin Arqam and Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with them), and I heard them narrating that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the night of the cave (of Thawr), Allah Almighty commanded a tree, and it grew in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Allah Almighty commanded the spider, and it spun a web in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); and Allah Almighty commanded two wild pigeons, and they settled at the mouth of the cave. The young men of Quraysh - one man from every clan - advanced with their sticks, clubs and swords, until, when they were about forty cubits from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), one of them hurried forward to look into the cave. He saw two pigeons at the mouth of the cave, so he went back to his companions. They asked him: 'What is the matter with you, that you did not look into the cave?' He said: 'I saw two pigeons at the mouth of the cave, so I was certain that no one is in it.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard what he said and knew that Allah Almighty had warded off (the enemy) from him (peace and blessings be upon him) by means of those two (pigeons). So he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for them and invoked (Allah's name for blessing) upon them, and fixed a compensation (penalty) for them, and they were left (protected) in the Haram."
