Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The first person Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sent to Kufah was Abu Ubayd al-Thaqafi - the father of al-Mukhtar - and he was martyred. Then he sent Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him); he stayed five years, then he removed him. Then he sent Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him); he stayed one year, then he removed him. Then he sent al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him); he stayed one year, then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred. When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph, he sent Sa'd to Kufah again; he stayed one year, then he removed him. Then he sent al-Walid bin Uqbah; he stayed five years, then he removed him. Then he sent Sa'id bin al-As; he stayed five years, then he removed him. Then he sent Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him); he stayed one year, then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred and the tribulation broke out. Then the first whom Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed as governor over Kufah was al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him); he stayed nine years, then died. Then he sent Ziyad bin Abihi; he stayed four years, then died. Then he sent al-Dahhak bin Qays; he stayed three years, then he removed him. Then he sent al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him); he stayed four months, then Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) died and the tribulation broke out. Then came the affair of Muslim bin Aqil and his companions.
