Urwah (bin al-Zubayr) (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: When the Hajj season came, some people of the Ansar from Banu Malik bin al-Najjar performed Hajj, among them Mu'adh bin Afra' and As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with them both); and from Banu Zurayq, Rafi' bin Malik and Dhakwan bin Abd Qays; and from Banu Abd al-Ashhal, Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan; and from Banu Amr bin Awf, Uwaym bin Sa'idah (may Allah be pleased with them). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them and told them his news - that Allah had chosen him by granting him prophethood and honour - and recited the Qur'an to them. When they heard his words they fell silent, and their hearts were reassured by his call, and they recognised what they used to hear from the People of the Book about his attributes and about what he was calling them to. So they believed him and had faith in him, and became among the means of good. Then they said to him: "You know the bloodshed that exists between Aws and Khazraj, and we love that to which Allah has guided and what you have commanded, and we will strive our utmost for Allah and for you. We advise you to do as you see fit; so stay, in the name of Allah, until we return to our people and tell them about your matter and call them to Allah and His Messenger. Perhaps Allah will bring reconciliation between us and unite our affair, for today we are distant from one another and hate one another. If you come to us today while we have not reconciled, we will not be able to form a united body for you. But we promise to meet you at the Hajj season of next year." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased with what they said. So they returned to their people and called them in secret, and told them about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and that with which Allah had sent him, and called to it through the Qur'an, until there hardly remained a house among the houses of the Ansar in which some people had not accepted Islam - without fail, someone or other had become Muslim. Then they sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Send us a man from your side who will call the people to the Book of Allah, for that is more likely to be followed." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) to them, the brother of Banu Abd al-Dar. He stayed among Banu Ghanm with As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him) and began calling people in secret, and Islam began to spread and its followers to increase, while they remained hidden in their calling. Then As'ad bin Zurarah and Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) went until they reached the well of Murri - or near it - and we sat there, and they sent for some people, who came to them secretly. While Mus'ab bin Umayr was speaking to them and reciting the Qur'an to them, Sa'd bin Mu'adh was informed about them. He came to them wearing his armour and carrying a spear, until he stood over them and said: "Why do you come into our houses with this lonely, friendless stranger, who misleads our weak ones with falsehood and calls them to himself? After this I do not want to see you in our protection." So they went back. Then they came a second time to the well of Murri - or near it - and Sa'd bin Mu'adh was informed about them again; this time he threatened them with a threat less than the first. When As'ad saw some softness in him, he said: "O my maternal cousin! Listen to his words; if you find anything objectionable, reject it, and if you find something good, accept it." Sa'd asked: "What does he say?" So Mus'ab bin Umayr recited this verse to them: "Ha Mim. By the clear Book. Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an so that you may understand" [Surah al-Zukhruf: 2]. Sa'd bin Mu'adh said: "I hear only what I recognise." So he went back, Allah having guided him, but he did not reveal his Islam to them until he returned to his people. Then he called Banu Abd al-Ashhal to Islam, made his Islam public, and said: "Whoever has any doubt about it - young or old, male or female - let him bring us a better way than this and we will adopt it. By Allah! A matter has come in which necks will be cut." So, upon Sa'd's acceptance of Islam and his call, almost all of Banu Abd al-Ashhal became Muslim, except a few who are not mentioned, and this was the first household among the households of the Ansar to become Muslim in its entirety. Then Banu al-Najjar expelled Mus'ab bin Umayr and were harsh towards As'ad bin Zurarah, so Mus'ab bin Umayr moved to Sa'd bin Mu'adh and stayed there, calling (people), and Allah kept guiding people at his hands, until there hardly remained a house among the houses of the Ansar in which some people had not accepted Islam. Their nobles also became Muslim, and Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, and their idols were broken. So the Muslims became the most honoured among them, and their affairs were set right. Then Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was called "al-Muqri'" (the teacher of the Qur'an).
