Muhammad bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed, after Uhud, for the remainder of Shawwal, and Dhu al-Qa'dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah - whose Hajj the polytheists conducted that year - and Muharram; then, four months after Uhud, he sent the people of Bi'r Ma'unah on a journey.
Their story is as my father, Ishaq bin Yasar, narrated to me from al-Mughirah bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham, and Abdullah bin Abi Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm, and other people of knowledge; they said: Abu Bara' Amir bin Malik bin Ja'far - Mula'ib al-Asinnah (the one who plays with spears) - came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) invited him to Islam, but he neither became Muslim nor kept far from Islam, and he said: O Muhammad! If you were to send some of your Companions to the people of Najd to invite them to faith, I hope that they would respond to you; so send them, so that they may call people to your religion. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent al-Mundhir bin Amr - the brother of Banu Sa'idah bin Ka'b bin al-Khazraj, who was called "al-Mu'niq li-yamut" (the one who hastened to his death) - with forty of the best of the Muslims, among them al-Harith bin al-Simmah; Haram bin Milhan, the brother of Banu Adi bin al-Najjar; Urwah bin Asma' bin al-Salt al-Sulami; Nafi' bin Budayl bin Warqa' al-Khuza'i; Amir bin Fuhayrah, the freed slave of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); and other named men from among the best of the Muslims. They set out until they encamped at Bi'r Ma'unah - which lies between the land of Banu Amir and the stony tract (harrah) of Banu Sulaym; both places are near it, but it is nearer to Sulaym. When they encamped there, they sent Haram bin Milhan with the letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to Amir bin al-Tufayl. When he reached them, he, without even looking at the letter, attacked the man and killed him. Then he called upon Banu Amir for help against them, but they refused to answer his call and said: We will not break the covenant of Abu Bara'; he has given them a covenant and protection. So he called upon the tribes of Banu Sulaym: Usayyah, Ri'l and Dhakwan, and they answered him and went out until they fell upon those people and surrounded them in their camp. When (the Muslims) saw them, they took up their swords and fought them until they were martyred to the last man, except Ka'b bin Zayd - the brother of Banu Dinar bin al-Najjar - for they left him with some life still in him; he was carried out from among the slain and lived until he was martyred on the day of the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq). At that time Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri and a man from the Ansar - from Banu Amr bin Awf - were grazing the people's animals, and nothing informed them of the calamity that had befallen their brothers except the birds circling over the camp. He said: By Allah! There is surely some matter with these birds. So they went forward to look, and saw the people lying in their blood, and the horsemen who had struck them were standing there. The Ansari said to Amr bin Umayyah: What is your opinion? He said: My opinion is that we go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and inform him of the news. The Ansari said: But I do not wish to keep myself away from a place where al-Mundhir bin Amr was martyred, nor should I have the news of it reach me through other men. Then he fought the people until he was martyred, and Amr bin Umayyah was taken captive. When he told them that he was from Mudar, Amir bin al-Tufayl released him and cut off his forelock, and freed him in place of a slave (whose freeing was vowed), which he claimed was due from his mother. Amr bin Umayyah set out until, when he was at al-Qarqarah at the head of Qanah, two men from Banu Amir came and sat with him in the same shade in which he was. Banu Amir had a covenant and protection with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), of which Amr bin Umayyah was unaware. When the two of them sat down, he asked: Who are you? They said: From Banu Amir. So he let them be until they fell asleep, then attacked them and killed them both, thinking that he had taken revenge on Banu Amir for his companions. When Amr bin Umayyah came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he told him the news. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Since you have killed two men, I shall certainly pay their blood money." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the doing of Abu Bara'; I already had misgivings and fear about it." When this reached Abu Bara', he was deeply grieved by Amir's betrayal of him, and by what had befallen the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) because of him and under his protection. Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said, inciting the family of Abu Bara' against Amir bin al-Tufayl: O Banu Umm al-Banin! Did this news not shake you, though you are among the chiefs of Najd? Amir mocked Abu Bara' in order to betray him, and a deliberate act is not like a mistake. Listen! Convey to Rabi'ah, the man of noble endeavours: What have you done (in this matter) after me? Your father is Abu Bara', the hero of wars, and your maternal uncle is the noble al-Hakam bin Sa'd. So Rabi'ah bin Amir attacked Amir bin al-Tufayl and struck him with a spear, which hit his thigh and wounded him, and he fell from his horse. He said: This is the doing of Abu Bara'. If I die, I forgive my blood to my uncle, so let no revenge be sought for it; and if I live, I shall act on my own judgement in what has been done to me.
