حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَخِي، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بِلَالٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: «بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ وَلَيْسَ مَعَنَا زَادٌ إِلَّا مِزْوَدٌ مِنْ تَمْرٍ وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْنَا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ وَكَانَ يُعْطِينَا حَفْنَةً تَمْرٍ حَتَّى نَغْدُوَ وَكَانَ يُعْطِينَا تَمْرَةً تَمْرَةً فَضَرَبَ الْبَحْرَ بِدَابَّةٍ فَأَكَلْنَا مِنْهَا، ثُمَّ إِنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ أَمَرَ بِالضِّلْعِ فَحَنَى، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ رَجُلًا فَرَكِبَ بَعِيرًا فَمَرَّ رَاكِبًا عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ»
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us out with a detachment, and we had no provisions except a bag of dates. He (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as our commander. He used to give us a handful of dates every day until they ran out, then he began giving us one date at a time. Then the sea cast out a creature for us, and we ate from it. Then Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that one of its ribs be bent and set upright, then he ordered a man, who mounted a camel and passed beneath it riding.
