Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and one morning I came close to him (peace and blessings be upon him) while we were travelling. I said: O Prophet of Allah! Will you not tell me of a deed that will admit me into Paradise and keep me far from the Fire? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have asked about something great, yet it is easy for the one for whom Allah makes it easy: that you worship Allah without associating anything with Him, establish the prayer, give zakah, fast the month of Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the House." Then he said: "Shall I not show you the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin, and a man's prayer in the depth of the night." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited: "Their sides forsake their beds" [al-Sajdah: 16] until he recited up to: "as a reward for what they used to do" [al-Sajdah: 17]. Then he said: "Shall I not tell you of the head of the matter of Islam, its pillar, and the peak of its hump? Jihad." Then he said: "Shall I not tell you of what holds all of that together?" I said: Certainly, O Messenger of Allah! The narrator said: So he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of his tongue and said: "Keep this under your control." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will we be held to account for what we speak? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu'adh! Does anything throw people on their faces - or he said: on their noses - into the Fire except the harvests of their tongues?"
