حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ السَّكُونِيِّ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ، قَالَ: أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِصَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ لَيْلَةً، فَأَخَّرَ بِهَا حَتَّى ظَنَّ الظَّانُّ أَنْ قَدْ صَلَّى وَلَيْسَ بِخَارِجٍ، ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ خَرَجَ بَعْدُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ قَائِلٌ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَقَدْ ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّكَ صَلَّيْتَ وَلَسْتَ بِخَارِجٍ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَعْتِمُوا بِهَذِهِ الصَّلَاةِ، فَإِنَّكُمْ قَدْ فُضِّلْتُمْ بِهَا عَلَى سَائِرِ الْأُمَمِ، وَلَمْ يُصَلِّهَا أَحَدٌ قَبْلَكُمْ»
Asim bin Humayd al-Sakuni (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: One night we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the Isha prayer, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed it until one who supposed supposed that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had already prayed and would not come out. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out afterwards, and someone said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! I supposed that you had prayed and would not come out. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Delay this prayer, for you have been favoured through it over all other nations, and no one before you prayed it."
