حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ مُقْبِلٍ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبِي، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَتَّابٍ، مَوْلَى هُرْمُزَ - رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ وَاسِطٍ - عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِيَدِي هَذِهِ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، وَسَمِعْتُهُ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ كَانَ رَدِيفَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «بَشِّرِ النَّاسَ أَنَّهُ مَنْ مَاتَ وَهُوَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ» فَقَالَ مُعَاذٌ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَفَلَا أُبَشِّرُ بِهِ النَّاسَ؟ قَالَ: «إِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ يَتَّكِلُوا عَلَيْهَا»
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: With this hand of mine I gave the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to hear and obey as far as I am able. And I heard that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Give the people the glad tidings that whoever dies while not associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not tell this to the people?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I fear that they will rely on it alone."
