Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, while we were sitting on a mat: "There will soon be a trial (fitnah)." The Companions asked: "What should we do?" The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his hand back to the mat and took hold of it, then said: "They will do like this." The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told them, "There will soon be a trial," but most of the people did not hear it. So Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you not hear what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is saying?" The people asked: "What did he say?" He said: "He is saying: 'There will soon be a trial.'" The Companions said: "Then what should we do, O Messenger of Allah, and what course should we take?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Return to your first (former) state."
