Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and with me were two men from the Ash'aris, one on my right and the other on my left, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was using the tooth-stick (miswak). Both of them asked for an official post. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Musa - or: O Abdullah -" I said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, they did not tell me what was in their hearts, and I did not know that they were seeking a post." It is as if I can still see his (peace and blessings be upon him) tooth-stick under his lip. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "We do not appoint to our work anyone who seeks it himself; but you go, O Abu Musa - or: O Abdullah bin Qays -." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to Yemen, and then sent Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) after him. When Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) reached him, he laid out a cushion for him and said: "Please sit down." Then he saw a man who was tied up. He asked: "What is this?" Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This man was a Jew, then he accepted Islam, then he returned to his (old) evil religion." Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will not sit until he is killed; this is the judgement of Allah and His Messenger" - he said it three times. So an order was given concerning him, and he was killed.
