Awf bin al-Harith bin Tufayl (may Allah have mercy on him), who was the maternal nephew of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was told that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) had said, regarding a sale or gifts that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had made: By Allah! Aishah must stop, or else I will place a restriction on her. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: Did he say that? The people said: Yes. She said: I take upon myself a vow to Allah that I will never speak a single word to Ibn al-Zubayr. When her boycott of him had gone on long, Ibn al-Zubayr sought to have people intercede with her, but Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: By Allah! I will not accept anyone's intercession concerning him, nor will I ever break my vow. When the matter had gone on long for Ibn al-Zubayr, he spoke to Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah and Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth (may Allah be pleased with them both) - and both of them were from Banu Zuhrah - and said to them: I adjure you by Allah to take me in to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and (know) that it is not lawful for her to make a vow to cut me off. So Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah and Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth set off with Ibn al-Zubayr wrapped in their cloaks, until they asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) for permission to enter and said: Peace be upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the mercy of Allah and His blessings; may we come in? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Come in. They said: O Mother of the Believers! All of us? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Yes, all of you come in - and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) did not know that Ibn al-Zubayr was with them. When they went in, Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) went inside the curtain, embraced Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and began imploring her and weeping. Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah and Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with them both) began imploring Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) by Allah to speak to him and forgive him, and they said to her: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cutting off, as you know, and he said: "It is not lawful for a Muslim to cut off his brother for more than three nights." When they had reminded Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) again and again and made her fearful, she too began reminding them and weeping, saying: I made a vow, and the matter of a vow is serious. The two of them kept insisting with her until she spoke to Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both); then she freed forty slaves for her vow. Afterwards, even after freeing forty slaves, she would remember that vow of hers and then weep until her tears soaked her head-covering.
