Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seized some people of my tribe on an accusation. Then a man from my tribe came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering a sermon, and said: "O Muhammad! On what grounds are my neighbours being detained?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Then he said: "Some people are saying that you forbid something and then make it lawful for yourself." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What are you saying?" So I began talking between the two of them to deflect the matter, fearing that he (peace and blessings be upon him) might hear it and invoke a supplication against my tribe after which they would never prosper. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) persisted until he understood it, and said: "They have indeed said it," or he said: "He has said it about them. By Allah! If I had done that, it would be upon me and not upon them. Release his neighbours for his sake."
