حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الصَّبَّاحُ الرَّقِّيُّ، ثنا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ الْمُقْعَدُ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ حُسَيْنٍ الْمُعَلِّمِ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي هِلَالُ بْنُ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ، أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ الْحَكَمِ السُّلَمِيَّ، حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا قَوْمٌ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِالْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، وَإِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَدْ جَاءَ بِالْإِسْلَامِ، وَإِنَّ رِجَالًا مِنَّا يَخُطُّونَ، فَقَالَ: «قَدْ كَانَ نَبِيٌّ مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ يَخُطُّ، فَمَنْ وَافَقَ خَطَّهُ فَذَاكَ» ، قَالَ: وَإِنَّ مِنَّا رِجَالًا يَتَطَيَّرُونَ، قَالَ: «ذَاكَ شَيْءٌ يَجِدُونَهُ فِي صُدُورِهِمْ، وَلَكِنْ لَا يَضُرُّهُمْ» ، قُلْتُ: وَمِنَّا رِجَالٌ يَأْتُونَ الْكُهَّانَ، قَالَ: «فَلَا تَأْتُوهُمْ»
Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin al-Hakam al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we had only recently come out of the days of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has brought Islam, and among us are men who draw lines (in the sand)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of the prophets used to draw lines, so whoever matches his lines, that is fine." I said: "And among us are men who take evil omens." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is something they feel in their breasts, but it does not harm them." I said: "And among us are men who go to soothsayers." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then do not go to them."
