Ibn Mawhab narrates that he was with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) when Marwan came to him and spoke to him about his needs, and said: O Commander of the Believers! Fulfil my need, for by Allah, my burden is very great; I have become the father of ten, the brother of ten and the uncle of ten. When Marwan turned and left, and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was sitting with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) on his couch, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I adjure you by Allah, O Ibn Abbas! Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Banu al-Hakam reach thirty men, they will make the verses of Allah something passed from hand to hand among themselves, take His servants as slaves, and make His Book a means of deception. Then when they reach four hundred and ninety-nine, their destruction will come quicker than (the falling of) fruit"? Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Allah, yes. Then Marwan mentioned a need of his, so Marwan bin Abd al-Malik returned with it to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and spoke to him about it. When he turned and left, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I adjure you by Allah, O Ibn Abbas! Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned this one and said: "The father of the four tyrants?" Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Allah, yes.
