Abu Abd Rabb Ubaydah bin al-Muhajir (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that he heard Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) relate on the pulpit that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A man who had transgressed against himself came to a man and said: This man (meaning me) has killed ninety-nine souls, all of them unjustly; is there any repentance for me? He said: No. So he killed him (too). Then he came to another man and said: This man has killed a hundred souls, all unjustly; is there any repentance for him? He said: If I were to tell you that Allah does not accept the repentance of one who repents, I would have lied to you. There is a place here in which some people worship; go to them and worship Allah with them. So he set off towards them and died in that state. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him, and Allah Almighty sent an angel to them, who said: Measure the distance between the two places; whichever he is closer to, he will be counted among its people. They found him closer to the monastery of the penitent by a fingertip, so he was forgiven."
These are the words of the narration of al-Walid.
