Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) took the pledge of allegiance for Yazid, he set out for Hajj. He passed through Madinah and addressed the people, saying: We have pledged allegiance to Yazid, so you too pledge allegiance. Upon this Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: By Allah, I am more entitled to it than he is, for my father is better than his father, my grandfather is better than his grandfather, my mother is better than his mother, and I am better than him. Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "As for your saying that your grandfather is better than his grandfather, you have spoken the truth: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is better than Abu Sufyan bin Harb. As for your saying that your mother is better than his mother, you have spoken the truth: Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), is better than the daughter of Mijdal. As for your saying that your father is better than his father, his father contended with your father, and Allah decided in favour of his father against your father. And as for your saying that you are better than him, he is more astute and more sensible than you; even a thousand like you in exchange for him would not please me."
