حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْقَاضِي، ثنا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، قَالَا: ثنا مَرْحُومُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَطَّارُ، ثنا أَبُو نَعَامَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: خَرَجَ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَلَى حَلْقَةٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ: مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ؟، قَالُوا: جَلَسْنَا نَذْكُرُ اللهَ، قَالَ: آللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ إِلَّا ذَلِكَ؟، قَالُوا: وَاللهِ مَا أَجْلَسَنَا إِلَّا ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: أَمَا إِنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَحْلِفْكُمْ تُهْمَةً لَكُمْ، وَمَا كَانَ أَحَدٌ بِمَنْزِلَتِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَقَلَّ عَنْهُ حَدِيثًا مِنِّي، وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ عَلَى حَلْقَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، فَقَالَ: «مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ؟» ، قَالُوا: جَلَسْنَا نَذْكُرُ اللهَ وَنَحْمَدُهُ عَلَى مَا هَدَانَا لِلْإِسْلَامِ وَمَنَّ عَلَيْنَا بِكَ، قَالَ: «آللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ إِلَّا ذَاكَ؟» ، قَالُوا: آللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَنَا إِلَّا ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: «أَمَا إِنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَحْلِفْكُمْ تُهْمَةً لَكُمْ، إِنَّهُ أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُبَاهِي بِكُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ»
Abu Uthman al-Nahdi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to a circle in the mosque and said: What has made you sit? They said: We are sitting remembering Allah. He said: By Allah, is it only that which has made you sit? They said: By Allah, only that has made us sit. He said: Listen! I did not ask you to swear because I suspected you. There is no one with my standing with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who narrated fewer hadith from him (peace and blessings be upon him) than I. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to a circle of his Companions and said: "What has made you sit?" They said: We are sitting remembering Allah and praising Him for guiding us to Islam and favouring us with you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, is it only that which has made you sit?" They said: By Allah, only that has made us sit. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen! I did not ask you to swear because I suspected you; rather, Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me and informed me that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, boasts of you before the angels."
