Hakim bin Mu'awiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said to his brother Sayyiduna Malik bin Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him): Come, take us to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for he knows you and does not know me, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) has detained some people of Banu Bahdam who are my neighbours. So the two of them came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and Malik bin Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I have accepted Islam, and my neighbours have accepted Islam, so release them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not answer him. Then he repeated it, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not answer him. Then he repeated it again, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not answer him. So he stood up in anger and said: If you do this, people will think that you call to one thing and yourself do the opposite. So I began to rebuke him and restrain him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is he saying?" The people said: He is saying such-and-such. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If that was done, its burden is upon me, and nothing of it is upon them. Release his neighbours to him."
