Malik bin Hamzah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, from his grandfather Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi al-Khazraji (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: He had a well in Madinah called Bi'r Buda'ah, into which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had spat, and he would take glad tidings and blessing from it. The narrator said: When Abu Usayd cut the fruit of his garden, he put it in an upper room of his. A ghoul (a jinn) would come secretly to his upper room, steal his dates and spoil them. He complained of this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Usayd! That is the ghoul. Lie in wait for her, and when you hear her coming in, meaning the thud of her landing, say: In the name of Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has detained me." The ghoul said: O Abu Usayd! Excuse me from your making me go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I give you a covenant by Allah that I will neither come to your house nor steal your dates. And I will point you to a verse of the Book of Allah which you should recite over your house, and then no one will come against your family; and recite it over your vessel too, and we will not uncover its lid. So she gave the covenant with which he was satisfied, then said: The verse to which I am guiding you is Ayat al-Kursi. Then she went off rubbing her backside and breaking wind. When she had turned and gone, Abu Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him the whole incident, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She spoke the truth, though she is a liar."
