Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Ibn Abd al-Hamid, whose name was Muhammad, while a man was saying to him: May Allah do such-and-such to you, O Muhammad! and was reviling him. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called him and said: O Ibn Zayd! I will not tolerate that the name of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) be reviled because of you. By Allah, as long as I live you will never be called Muhammad. And he renamed him Abd al-Rahman. Then he sent for Banu Talhah, who were seven brothers, and their chief and eldest was Muhammad bin Talhah, so that their names might be changed. Muhammad (bin Talhah) said: O Commander of the Believers! I remind you of Allah; by Allah, it was Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself who named me "Muhammad." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Get up; there is no way to change a name that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given.
