Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 16252 — I was never better off in mounts

Sayyiduna Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was never better off in mounts and provisions in any expedition than I was in that expedition. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, I thought: I will get ready tomorrow and then catch up with him (peace and blessings be upon him). So I busied myself with my preparations, evening came and I had not finished. Then I thought: Tomorrow I will work hard at my preparations; the people will still be close by, and I will catch up with them. Again evening came and I had not finished. When the third day came, I again began my preparations, evening came and again I had not finished. So I said: Alas! The people left three days ago. So I stayed behind. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, the people began making excuses to him (peace and blessings be upon him). I came and stood before him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I was never better off in mounts and provisions in any expedition than I was in this expedition. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from me, ordered the people not to speak to us, and ordered our wives to keep away from us. The narrator said: One day I climbed over the wall of a garden, and suddenly I came face to face with Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both). I said: O Jabir! I adjure you by Allah, do you know of me ever having deceived Allah and His Messenger? He remained silent and did not speak to me. One day, while I was in this state, I heard a man on a hill saying: Ka'b! Ka'b! He came near me and said: Give Ka'b the glad tidings.
