حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْخُزَاعِيُّ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ، عَنْ عِيَاضِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَرْحٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ، قَالَ: خَرَجْتُ لَيْلَةً مِنَ اللَّيَالِي مُظْلِمَةً، فَقُلْتُ: لَوْ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَشَهِدَتُ مَعَهُ الصَّلَاةَ وَآنَسْتُهُ بِنَفْسِي، فَفَعَلْتُ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ بَرَقَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَرَآنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: «يَا قَتَادَةُ مَا هَاجَ عَلَيْكَ؟» ، فَقُلْتُ: أَرَدْتُ، بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي أَنْتَ، أَنْ أُونِسَكَ، قَالَ: «خُذْ هَذَا الْعُرْجُونَ فَتَحَصَّنْ بِهِ، فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا خَرَجْتَ أَضَاءَ لَكَ عَشْرًا أَمَامَكَ وَعَشْرًا خَلْفَكَ» ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِذَا دَخَلْتَ بَيْتَكَ اضْرِبْ بِهِ مِثْلَ الْحَجَرِ الْأَخْشَنِ فِي إِنْسَانِ الْبَيْتِ، فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ الشَّيْطَانُ» ، قَالَ: فَخَرَجْتُ فَأَضَاءَ لِي، ثُمَّ ضَرَبْتُ مِثْلَ الْحَجَرِ الْأَخْشَنِ حَتَّى خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِي
Sayyiduna Qatadah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went out on a dark night and said (to myself): If only I could go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), attend the prayer with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and keep him (peace and blessings be upon him) company with my presence. So I did that. When I entered the mosque, lightning flashed in the sky, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me and said: "O Qatadah! What brought you here?" I said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, I wanted to keep you company. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this palm stalk and seek protection with it; when you go out, it will light up ten steps in front of you and ten steps behind you." Then he said: "When you enter your house, strike with it whatever (you see) inside the house that looks like a rough stone, for that is Satan." So I went out and it lit up for me; then I struck that thing like a rough stone until it left my house.
