حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمُعَلَّى الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، ثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، ثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، يَقُولُ: حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ، قَالَ: زَارَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَنْزِلِنَا فَقَالَ: «السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ» قَالَ: فَرَدَّ سَعْدٌ رَدًّا خَفِيًّا ثُمَّ قَالَ: «السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ» فَرَدَّ سَعْدٌ رَدًّا خَفِيًّا ثُمَّ قَالَ: «السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ» فَرَدَّ سَعْدٌ رَدًّا خَفِيًّا، فَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاتَّبَعَهُ سَعْدٌ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنِّي كُنْتُ أسْمَعُ تَسْلِيمَكَ فَأَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ رَدًّا خَفِيًّا لِتُكْثِرَ عَلَيْنَا مِنَ السَّلَامِ، فَانْصَرَفَ ضَيْفُهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَأَمَرَ لَهُ سَعْدٌ بِغُسْلِ الْمَوْضِعِ فَغَسَلَ وَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ أَو نَاوَلَتْهُ الْمَرْأَةُ مِلْحَفَةٌ مَصْبُوغَةٌ بِوَرْسٍ وَزَعْفَرَانَ فَاشْتَمَلَ بِهَا وَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَيْهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: «اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ صَلَوَاتِكَ وَرَحْمَتَكَ عَلَى آل سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ» قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَصَابَ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ الِانْصِرَافَ قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهِ سَعْدٌ حِمَارًا، فَوَطَأَ عَلَيْهِ بِقَطِيفَةٍ فَرَكِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ: يَا قَيْسُ اصْحَبْ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «يَا قَيْسُ ارْكَبْ» فَأَبَيْتُ ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِمَّا أَنْ تَرْكَبَ وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَنْصَرِفَ» قَالَ: فَانْصَرَفْتُ
Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited us in our home and said: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah." The narrator said: Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) answered in a low voice. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah." Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) again answered in a low voice. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said a third time: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah." Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) again answered in a low voice, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to turn back. Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) went after him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I was hearing your greeting and deliberately answering you in a low voice so that you would give us more greetings. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned as his guest, and Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered the place to be washed; it was washed and he took a ritual bath (ghusl). Then he - or his wife - handed him a wrap dyed with wars and saffron, and he wrapped himself in it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands and said: "O Allah, send Your blessings (salawat) and Your mercy upon the family of Sa'd bin Ubadah." The narrator said: Then he ate some of the food. When he was about to leave, Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a donkey near to him and spread a cloth over it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted it. Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Qays, go with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Qays, ride." I refused. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "Either ride or go back." The narrator said: So I went back.
