Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that on the morning of al-Aqabah the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Come, pick up pebbles for me." So I picked up seven small pebbles for him. When I placed them in his palm, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "With ones like these (stone), with ones like these. Beware of extremism (ghuluww, going beyond the limits) in religion, beware of extremism, for those before you were destroyed only because of extremism in religion."
This hadith was narrated from Awf by a number of narrators, among them Sufyan al-Thawri, but none narrated it with the words "Ibn Abbas from his brother" except Ja'far bin Sulayman, and none narrated it from Ja'far except Abd al-Razzaq.
