Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were on a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We travelled one night until, in the last part of the night shortly before dawn, we fell into that sleep than which no sleep is sweeter to a traveller, and nothing woke us but the heat of the sun. The first to wake was Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), then so-and-so and so-and-so - the narrator named them - then Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) woke up. It was the way of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, no one would wake him (peace and blessings be upon him) until he (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up by himself, because we did not know what was happening to him (peace and blessings be upon him) in his (peace and blessings be upon him) sleep. When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) woke up and saw what had befallen the people - and he was a hardy man - he said the takbir and raised his voice with the takbir. He kept on saying the takbir and raising his voice until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up at his voice. The people complained to him (peace and blessings be upon him) about what had befallen them, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No harm; set off." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) set off and travelled a short distance, then dismounted, called for water for ablution and performed ablution. Then the call to prayer was given and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer. When he finished his prayer and turned around, he saw a man standing apart who had not prayed with the people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O so-and-so! What kept you from praying with the people?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, I am in a state of major impurity (janabah) and there is no water. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perform tayammum with clean earth, for that is sufficient for you." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) set off, and the people complained to him of thirst. He (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and called so-and-so - Abu Raja' had named him - and he also called Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and said to them both: "Go and look for water." The two of them set off and met a woman sitting on her camel between two water-skins - or two large water-bags. They went up to her and said to her: (Where is the) water? She said: I was at the water yesterday at this very hour. They said: Then come along. She said: Where to? They said: To the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: Is this the one who is called 'the Sabi'?' They said: He is the one you mean; come along. So they brought her to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) the whole story. The people helped her down from her camel, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a vessel and poured into it from the mouths of the two water-skins - or the two water-bags. Then he rinsed his mouth and returned (the water) into the vessel, then returned it into the mouths of the two water-skins, then tied their mouths firmly and opened their lower spouts. It was announced among the people: Drink and fill up. So whoever wished drank, and whoever wished filled up. Last of all, he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave (water) to the man who was in a state of janabah and said: "Go and pour it over yourself." The woman was standing, watching what was being done with her water. By Allah, when it was completed, it seemed to us that the water-skins were fuller than they had been before. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gather for her whatever there is of dates, sawiq and flour," until the people gathered food for her in a cloth, mounted her on her camel and placed the food in front of her. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "You know, by Allah, that we have not taken anything from your water; rather, it is Allah who gave us to drink." She came to her family, having been delayed in reaching them, and they said: O so-and-so! What kept you? She said: Something strange. Two men met me and took me to this man who is called 'the Sabi',' and he did such-and-such, which is what happened. By Allah, either he is the greatest sorcerer between this and this (that is, between the heavens and the earth), or he is truly the Messenger of Allah. After that, the Muslims kept raiding the idolaters around her, but would not harm the group of dwellings near her. One day she said to her people: By Allah, I do not think that these people are leaving us alone (without reason). Do you have any interest in Islam? They heeded her, and they came, and all of them had entered Islam.
